Marvel’s Avengers,
Square Enix’s upcoming open world superhero action-RPG, has received an in-depth overview video digging a little deeper into the game’s story and gameplay.
In the overview, fans learn that the Avengers get blamed for a catastrophe in San Francisco soon after they set up a new base of operations in the city. When faced with public backlash, the team of superheroes is forced to disband, only coming together again to fight the organization that replaces them in their absence (a technology company called AIM that “aims” to protect the world from superhuman threats, including the former Avengers).
Gameplay has standard RPG elements, where players will assume the role of some of their favorite superheroes, including Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow, Thor, and the Hulk. As they progress in the game world, players will be able to customize their heroes in different outfits that have been established over the past 80 years of Marvel’s history, as well as some new costumes unique to the game. Moreover, fans will upgrade their heroes’ abilities as they gain experience to create a more deadly superhero arsenal.
After the success of Marvel’s Spider-Man—which was released on September 7, 2018 on PlayStation 4, developed by Insomniac Games, and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment—Square Enix is looking to capitalize on the success of one of the greatest superhero games ever made. Despite Marvel’s Spider-Man’s lack of innovation in its use of open-world tropes, the gameplay and overall narrative were highly praised.
If Crystal Dynamics (developer) and Square Enix study what Insomniac Games and Sony accomplished together closely, Marvel’s Avengers could achieve similar success.
Marvel’s Avengers is scheduled to release on May 15, 2020 for Google Stadia, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
