Microsoft announced today a new scheme to guarantee an Xbox Series X|S for US Xbox Insiders. The Console Purchase Pilot is available on the Xbox Insider Hub on Windows 10 and Xbox One.
Registering insiders can get a chance to secure an Xbox console from Microsoft, though the company warns that not all who sign up can get an Xbox console.
Since the release of the Xbox Series X|S and the PlayStation 5, there have been shortages caused by scalpers, a shortage of semiconductors, and COVID-19 causing issues with logistics. Microsoft’s attempt to get the console directly to the player could at least avoid a small percentage of consoles in the hands of scalpers. If Console Purchase Pilot proves to be successful, the scheme could be deployed in other territories.
Xbox Chief Financial Officer, Amy Hood talked about the supply issue of the Xbox Series X|S in their third-quarter earnings call stating that “Significant demand for the Xbox Series X and S will continue to be constrained by supply”.
PlayStation told investors and analyst that PlayStation 5 will continue to be scarce due to high demand and a lack of semiconductors, according to Chief Financial Officer, Hiroki Totoki, who said: “I don’t think demand is calming down this year and even if we secure a lot more devices and produce many more units of the PlayStation 5 next year, our supply wouldn’t be able to catch up with demand.”
