Microsoft Claims that PlayStation has 70% Share of the Console Market While Xbox has 30%

During a recent press conference at a European Commission hearing, Microsoft claimed that PlayStation has a 70% share of the global console market while Xbox has 30%. In Japan, the company is said to have 4% share against Sony’s 96%, and according to a recent tweet from The Verge’s Tom Warren, the company has a 20% market share against Sony’s 80% in the European Economic Area. However, details on either company’s share on the United States market were not revealed. The first statement is via company president Brad Smith who made the statement for Microsoft’s proposal on why its acquisition of Activision Blizzard to be approved, after recent objections the company received from the EU. The company also stated that it had offered Sony a 10-year legally enforceable contract to make each new Call of Duty game available on PlayStation the same day it comes to Xbox. Additionally, Microsoft also recently announced a 10-year partnership with Nvidia to bring its Xbox and PC games to Nvidia’s cloud streaming service GeForce Now, as well as a “binding 10-year legal agreement” to bring Call of Duty to Nintendo platforms as previously stated by Phil Spencer in December.

Statements from Smith via GamesIndustry.biz can be seen below:

“Think about the market in Europe. It is a market where Sony has an 80% share. Globally, it is about 70/30. In Japan, it is 96/4. These numbers have been remarkably steady for two decades. Even last year, when there were issues with Sony’s supply chain, they came back strong.”

“We haven’t agreed a deal with Sony, but I hope we will,”

“I hope today is a day that will advance our industry and regulation in a responsible way.”
