One of the earlier monsters that hunters will face in Monster Hunter World is Kulu-Ya-Ku. This trickster bird wyvern cannot fly, but makes up for it with powerful legs that allow it to move quickly, as well as jump huge distances to attack foes or scale the environment. Kulu-Ya-Ku is a bit of a kleptomaniac, stealing eggs from other monsters whenever it comes across a nest. This is a pretty basic fight, so hunting down this monster should be no problem, even for novice hunters. Here are some quick tips and tricks to help take it down fast.
Kulu-Ya-Ku has a unique mechanic: it will begin to dig into the ground for a short period of time. The monster will then pull out a small boulder and use it as a shield and a weapon against the hunter. While the boulder is not large, the monster is small enough that it blocks almost all attacks from the front with any sharpness weapon, easily deflecting them. Kulu-Ya-Ku will also attack with the boulder, lifting it up and smashing its target with it. If the monster is attacked enough by any weapon, or hit with the slinger using a piercing pod, Kulu-Ya-Ku will drop it and it will break on the ground.
Being such an early monster during the hunter’s journey, Kulu-Ya-Ku has a very basic set of attacks to watch for. During the fight, the monster’s main attacks consist of pecking at the hunters while they are attacking from the front or charging forward, slightly swiping at its target with its front arms. When at a distance, Kulu-Ya-Ku will face its target and jump directly at them for a good distance, trying to knock down its target and do damage with the talons on its feet. When the monster is holding its boulder, it gains an advantage in defense and offence. Attacks from the front will tend to bounce off the boulder instead of connecting. Watch for Kulu-Ya-Ku to stand still for a moment, perking its head up and holding the boulder underneath its chin. After a few seconds, the monster will slam the boulder in front of it in an attempt to hit its target. This attack is easily avoided by running around behind the monster while it is stationary, getting away from the rock smash and opening up a great opportunity to get in some free damage.
