NEO: The World Ends With Youhas been announced for the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch, coming Summer 2021. Square Enix’s sequel to the critically acclaimed The World Ends With You was announced earlier today with an official announcement trailer highlighting the story, combat, and characters players will come into contact with in their trip through Shibuya.Much like the first entry in the series, NEO: The World Ends With You is set in Shibuya, a district in Japan bustling with people. The location of the Hachiko statue, Shibuya crossing (also known as Shibuya Shamble Crossing), and its iconic mirage of neon buildings make Shibuya a staple of Japanese culture. NEO: The World Ends With You, in tandem with its predecessor, incorporates the culture of this district as a dichotomy to the internal struggles of isolationism in a collectivist culture the teen protagonist is feeling and dealing with through the single-player story. Players fill the shoes of Rindo this time around, once again taking part in the “Reapers’ Game,” a life-or-death battle for survival. As was the case in the last iteration, Rindo is another protagonist who must play in this game against his will, teaming up with others who have also found themselves in this dangerous situation. The combat in the original was focused around the functionality of the Nintendo DS, playing as two characters simultaneously on two screens, passing a puck between the two with the stylus to coordinate combos. In NEO: The World Ends With You, developer Square Enix is using updated technology (the original released in 2007) to render Shibuya in 3D this time, changing the combat significantly, from what can be gleaned from the trailer. NEO: The World Ends With You is coming to PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch, Summer 2021.Gaming Instincts is dedicated to bringing its readers all the latest and greatest news, reviews, guides, and updates for all their favorite titles and more.
