Netflix Announces Bioshock Adaptation

Popular atmospheric horror franchise Bioshock will officially be receiving an adaptation, Netflix has announced. While no writer or director has been attached to the project as of yet, The Hollywood Reporter has indicated that this partnership between Take-Two, 2K, and Netflix has been in the works for nearly a year.

Information on this project is currently scarce, with even the knowledge as to whether this will be a live-action or animated adaptation being unknown at this time. Previously, Pirates of The Carrabian director Gore Verbinski spoke about his film adaptation which was canceled prior, describing the project as an R-rated movie necessitating a $200 Million Budget. While this is not the same film by any stretch, this might offer some indication as to what audiences might expect for the latest project.

A new Bioshock game is also in development for current-gen systems and is being developed on Unreal Engine 5. It is being developed by Cloud Chamber Studios and will lack the involvement of series creator Ken Levine. Previously in January, Levine gave an interview in regards to a potential Bioshock movie, stating he hoped that for fans it would “feel like the things they loved in it are intact.”

While video game adaptations are nothing new, the industry has been rapidly ramping into the realm of multi-media. The cult classic, American Mcgee’s Alice, is set to get a series written by Solid Snake voice actor and screenwriter David Hayter. Sony has also announced plans to acquire Bungie, suggesting the prospect of adapting their game Destiny for film and TV as a large part of their plan.

Of course, that doesn’t include the adaptations that have been in the works for several years. Microsoft’s Halo and Sony’s The Last of Us are both set to receive television adaptations this year, with the second Sonic The Hedgehog film, as well as a Super Mario film also set to release before the end of 2022.
