Sony rounded out 2021 with one final State of Play in October where one of my favorite franchises, Star Ocean, was announced to be returning with a new game. Since then people have been wondering when we can expect the next PlayStation State of Play event will take place and kick off the new year. With several Playstation IPs such as Horizon: Forbidden West, Gran Tourismo 7, and Sifu set to launch earlier this year, it is also curious what we might be able to expect.

Tom Henderson, a popular leaker for information about Call of Duty and Battlefield, has tweeted when he is hearing that the next State of Play might occur. According to what he is hearing it is currently looking like February is the most likely timeframe for it occurring. While Sony has put on other events such as their showcase, he states that this one looks most likely to be a State of Play event.
As he points out, this State of Play has the potential to be pretty big all the same. At CES 2022 Sony had finally unveiled the PlayStation VR 2, which aims to take advantage of the PlayStation 5 hardware to improve upon their previous VR system. It was announced alongside Horizon VR: Call of The Mountain, a VR game set in the Horizon universe which is being developed by a recently acquired Firesprite studio. There is probably a lot of VR left to showcase in the buildup to the headset’s release, many would fit in the State of Play format.
Sony also spent much of 2021 purchasing studios including Bluepoint, Housemarque, Nixxes, as well as the aforementioned Firesprite. Most of these studios have multiple projects in development that have yet to be seen so this could be the opportunity to showcase one.
Unfortunately, none of this is set in stone yet and we will have to wait for an official statement to know when to mark our calendars. If it is going to occur in February it should not be too long before we find out.
