Following the Yakuza Fan Meeting during the Sega FES 2019 event, the general director of the Yakuza series Toshihiro Nagoshi gave some rather enlightening details on the currently unnamed new Yakuza title. While the main series has largely followed the same formula with subtle additions and features with each entry, this new title – which features a new protagonist – should introduce more “drastic” changes to the series.
“We want to use this change of main characters in the best way possible. When it comes to the story, before we had many scene that we’re teary or made you and the main character infuriated at something. This time, we’re thinking about putting in more comedic and goofy scenes that connect into the end, which has an impact of the player’s emotions.” – Toshihiro Nagoshi
While the majority of the Yakuza formula has focused around exploring a Japanese city and utilizing powerful arcade style of beat em’ up combat, there does seem to be some need for change. The previous fit perfectly for what the developers are trying to accomplish with Kiryu Kazuma as the protagonist, but with Kasuga Ichiban now as the playable hero it only makes sense to see some major changes.
Also, with the recent Japanese release of the Yakuza spin-off Judgment introducing some new features like the detective style gameplay, it will be exciting to see what else Sega has in store. Maybe some gunplay involved? Will Ichiban have expanded traversal abilities, such as climbing? Only time will tell. Be sure to stay tuned for more updates on the currently unnamed new Yakuza title in the works for the PS4.
