NieR Reincarnation has been announced by Square Enix and Applibot, via a reveal trailer, and is to be released in Japan February 18, 2021.
Whether the story involved will be limited to the events of Nier Automata or not has yet to be seen. The game brings 2B, 9S, and A2 back for a turn-based role-playing game set in the Drakengard universe, but in a limited capacity. Whether NieR Reincarnation is a continuation of the story from the previous NieR games or a retread of what the player has seen before has yet to be divulged.
The story and gameplay of this adaptation revolve around a character temporarily dubbed as the “Girl in White,” who is followed around by a ghost companion known as Mama, as they explore the remnants of the Cage; the realm the events of NieR takes place in. Gameplay is split into three parts. The first finds the girl exploring the ruins of civilization, finding statues named “Scarcrows” which are essentially upgrades for the character’s weapons, which are used to fight enemies in unlocked memories. In these “Weapon Stories”, players will experience gameplay moments through the lens of the original wielders of these weapons, from a side-scrolling perspective. The third gameplay moment comes in the form of further memories being played out through turn-based combat with characters from the previous games. This is where the player has access to characters from previous NieR games, through micro-transactions, presumably.
The game will be free-to-play, with cosmetic and character unlocks available through micro-transactions. The game has a supposed definitive ending, with gameplay being replayable after completing the storyline. Developers Applibot are restructuring the game to allow newcomers to be able to jump in and to understand the plot.
NieR Re[in]carnation is coming to Android and iOS February 18, 2021 in Japan, with a Western release coming some time later in 2021.
