Nintendo Boss Doesn’t See Cloud Taking Over Consoles

Nintendo’s president, Shuntaro Furukawa, recently talked about the future of gaming. While he does not see cloud-based gaming services surpassing consoles this decade, he does admit the future of gaming remains on the cloud. As reported by Nikkei (and translated by NintendoEverything) Shuntaro Furuwaka speaks about Nintendo, augmented reality, and the future of dedicated hardware.

“It’s possible that cloud gaming could capture the public’s interest in 10 years from now, however at this point in time, I do not think that dedicated hardware will go away,” the Nintendo boss told Nikkei.

“Something I do not want the public to misunderstand is that we are not turning our backs on new technologies – we are constantly researching and developing. Our hardware development teams evaluate all kinds of new technologies available thus far and consult with our software developers. If they determine that a technology can be used with a game, then they will utilize it. We will not be changing this fundamental approach moving forward.”

“As for AR, it is definitely one of the many aspects we are interested in. We are currently researching what interesting ways we can utilize it.”

Nintendo’s success came thanks to the approach of a cheaper, more simplistic hardware for all ages, but Nintendo attributes their success mostly to exclusive games and cheaper consoles. Cheaper consoles try to deliver a different experience, focusing on new technologies that appeal to game developers. The perfect example is the Wii, offering a modest GPU that managed to do fairly well against more powerful competition. The Nintendo Switch is also expected to outsell the upcoming Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5.

Nintendo’s North American president, Reggie Fils-Aime, has previously stated that cloud gaming will revolutionize the industry over the next decade.
