This video game console generation has been competitive, strange and surprising all at the same time. Some would argue that Microsoft came in last this console generation and when you start talking about the PlayStation and Nintendo Switch the conversation gets interesting. On one hand, the PS4 beat the Xbox One with exclusive first-party games like Spiderman, Horizon: Zero Dawn, The Last Of Us Remastered, God of War, Bloodborne and more. In that same breath, the Xbox One and Xbox One X had better hardware specs and graphics. Then you have the Nintendo Switch, which might not be the most powerful piece of hardware, but it is absolutely taking over the world.
Today in a Press Release Nintendo announced the system has sold more than 15 million units in North America alone. To be frank, it’s no surprise, between the portability and accessibility, people of all ages are picking up Switches. Then when you start talking about the games the conversation opens up even more. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey, Super Smash Brothers Ultimate only scratch the surface of great games Nintendo released this generation. The Nintendo Switch is doing immediately better than the Wii U and I believe what sets it apart is the amount of 3rd party & Indie support the system is receiving. Wargroove, Stardew Valley, The Binding of Isaac, Dark Souls: Remastered, Final Fantasy and countless others have turned the Switch into a powerhouse. With the addition of the Switch Lite, I expect this number to go up moving forward, here’s what Nintendo had to say going into the Holiday Season:
“As we enter our third holiday season, Nintendo Switch is creating smiles and enjoying broad appeal, with more than 15 million consumers across North America playing their favorite games whenever and wherever they like,” said Nintendo of America President Doug Bowser. “And this holiday, we are bringing Nintendo Switch owners even fresher and unique entertainment experiences, like Ring Fit Adventure, Luigi’s Mansion 3, Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield, and Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games: Tokyo 2020, adding to the system’s large and diverse library of games.”
This isn’t to say the Switch is without flaws, the joycon drift issue, Nintendo’s less than stellar online all prove as marks to the Switch. However, it’s clear Nintendo is going to keep pushing in 2020 and beyond. Do you have a Nintendo Switch? Do you plan on grabbing one this Holiday season?
