Nioh is based on the story of English sailor William Adams who was the first Western Samurai.
Team Ninja are incorporating other historical figures into the game, and as well as the already announced Hattori Hanzo, Tokugawa Ieyasu, founder and first shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate of Japan, will also be making an appearance alongside a ninja called Okatsu.
Nioh is due out for PlayStation 4 on February 7 in North America, February 8 in Europe, and February 9 in Japan.

“It is hard to describe Nioh without referencing FROM Software’s Souls series because the similarities are so obvious. Moving William from place to place, gathering souls and leveling up at checkpoints all feels familiar. However, Nioh hooked me by building real tension between areas. What will you face along the next path? New enemy types, vicious traps and multiple routes stack the odds firmly against you, making even the smallest victories feel important. After making my way through a sizable chunk of the level, I felt confident roaming around and exploring spots that had previously seemed impossible. It’s a sense of progression that goes beyond a leveling system, something cerebral that kept me coming back night after night. As complex as the various elements can seem, the core gameplay is gripping if you surrender to it.
Nioh‘s combat is definitely slicker than Souls‘ scuffles. You’ll collect a range of swords, giant axes, hammers and bows to use in battle, each one dealing bonus damage which is lost when your weapon breaks. Switch up your arsenal to cater your play style for the task at hand, whether it’s crowd control or precision striking. You also have three stances to switch between, changing how you attack. Low stance puts speed before damage, high deals powerful hits at a slower pace and middle balances the two. Changing stances also allows you to break through enemy blocks and defences, a key skill to master. Your ki (stamina) bar gets chipped away with every swing, dodge and roll. Deplete it and William will collapse, hunching over defenceless which often results in a swift death. I felt pressured into upgrading ki before anything because it is essential. Upgrading health seemed useless due to the severe damage done by the most basic of enemies – I couldn’t see any viable options for a ‘tank’ style of play.”
