During a fiscal year earnings call, EA confirmed that there will be no new Battlefield entry until fiscal year 2022 (April 2021-March 2022).
The information was originally released by Daniel Ahmad, a games industry analyst under Niko Partners alongside information that Apex Legends will serve as the publisher’s primary shooter. The company plans to bring the game to “mobile, new platforms, China and [the] esports scene” next year.
Moreover, EA also has “two unannounced partner titles from third-party developers next year as well as unannounced internal titles.”
The most recent entry in EA-DICE’s Battlefield series, Battlefield V, returned players to World War II and was released on November 20, 2018 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. The popular shooter did not meet EA’s sales expectations, the company attributing that failure to their focus on developing a single-player campaign rather than a battle royale mode that had become immensely popular in other titles, such as Fortnite, PUBG, and Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII.
In addition to 2018’s Battlefield V, EA-DICE developed Star Wars: Battlefront II, EA publishing the game and receiving backlash due to the game’s lootbox controversy. Furthermore, no information has been released regarding a Battlefront III, as Battlefront II’s player base has dwindled despite the semi-frequent updates the game receives that add new content, customization options, and events.
Fans have been waiting for any information regarding a new Battlefield after the recent installments inability to capitalize on popular game modes and repetitive matches, but it looks like they will have to wait another year and a half before the possibility of a new installment to the franchise.
