During an investors call, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang discussed the company’s Q4 earnings. The manufacturer is confident that their GPU’s can compete with next gen devices, specially on the notebook market.
The line-up of gaming laptops featuring the latest improvement in GPU technology from NVIDIA was announced at CES 2019, offering the flexibility of mobile gaming and graphics that can easily outperform a Nintendo Switch.
…The fact that we’ve been able to get RTX into a thin and light notebook, a thin and light notebook is really a breakthrough. And it’s one of the reasons why we’re seeing such great success in notebook.
It’s pretty clear that RTX is doing fantastic. And it’s very — it’s super clear now that ray tracing is the most important new feature of next-generation graphics. We have 30 — over 30 games that have been announced, 11 games or so that have been shipped. The pipeline of ray tracing games that are going to be coming out is just really, really exciting.
This achievement has motivated the manufacturer to keep in the current trend of investing on the laptop market, Jensen Huang has revealed that notebooks and laptops are now seen as consoles at NVIDIA’s HQ.
The second part of our business that is changing in gaming is the amount of notebook sales and the success of Nintendo Switch has really changed the profile of our overall gaming business. Our notebook business … has seen double-digit growth for eight consecutive quarters and this is unquestionably a new gaming category. Like it’s a new game console. This is going to be the largest game console in the world I believe. And the reason for that is because there are more people with laptops than there are of any other device.
Of course, gaming on a laptop has some advantages and compromises, like a true mobile device, it has all the functions of a console (If you don’t mind playing with a keyboard) and an average gaming laptop can easily output a 1080p resolution. But manufacturers like Asus must meet some compromises, weight, or heat dissipation are one of the inconveniences of a laptop, inconveniences that decreases the processing power.
Gaming on a laptop is a premium market, but it’s really impressive how gaming on a laptop keeps getting better, Intel has doubled the GPU power of their integrated processors with their 10nm 10th gen processors, just with their Iris Plus, games like Fortnite and Counter Strike Global Offensive can be run at 1080p, in the case of the latter, between 100 and 120 frames-per-second can be achieved with the integrated GPU. It’s rumored that Intel are close to joining AMD and NVIDIA in the GPU cards market.
