Risk of Rain 2 launched on Steam Early Access last week and thus far has seen incredible numbers backing up the new title. In its first week the developers saw the player count leap to now over 650,000 players after its debut.
“Uh, ok. First, I just wanted to say from the whole team how absolutely floored we are with the reception so far. I was personally hoping for something to match at least half of the original game: apparently we’re doing a LOT better. It’s absolutely surreal – thank you all again.” – Hopoo Games
During its premiere week, Risk of Rain 2 developers worked restlessly to provide and update the game to the player’s liking. And to keep players engaged and interested, Hopoo Games plans to release a flurry of updates to include new stages, bosses and items.
These numbers are no doubt helped out by the friend feature that allowed players who purchased the title before March 30, 2019 to obtain a second copy to give to a friend for free. Since it’s co-op based game, it seemed like a pretty viable move to help bring in more players – and it also seemed to work out in their favor as some 150,000 players took advantage of this feature.
It should also be stated that the original Risk of Rain saw up to 3 million players, so the sequel definitely has its work cut out for itself.
