Outriders Developers Want to Avoid Monetization Services

Speaking to Forbes, People Can Fly affirms that they would like to avoid turning Outriders into a service in which players would have to spend seasonal updates.

People Can Fly’s Bartek Kmita affirms that the development team has written a rich lore for the game adding that they “would love to make more adventures, more things for the franchise, more things for the planet.”

But this is of course up to players. If they like the game, if they enjoy the game, they want to stay with it. That doesn’t mean we are doing the game as a service style of monetization. But that doesn’t mean we will just abandon the game after it’s out. There are multiple options that we can use to support the game to give people content, give people things to do, without using the game as a service monetization.

Kmita suggests that People Can Fly could opt for releasing new content via huge expansions to the game and avoid the polemic seasonal updates that have become a standard for games like Destiny 2.

Outriders recently launched and have become a massive hit surpassing Borderlands 2 and Borderlands 3′s all-time user count on Steam.

  • Destiny 2 – 292,314
  • Warframe – 154,246
  • Outriders – 125,123

Square Enix’s marketing strategy for Outriders included giving away the game for Xbox Game Pass subscribers, the game is available at no additional cost on Xbox and Android devices via Xbox Cloud Gaming. Games like Destiny 2 and Rocket League became more profitable following a F2P release with microtransactions and paid DLCs.

Looter-shooters are often designed to get players hooked with the fear of missing out. Big publishers have seen it very profitable to release a game and expand the experience via seasonal DLCs, expansions, and microtransactions.

Square Enix is selling the Outriders Hell’s Rangers Content Pack on Steam for $6.99 USD. The pack includes:

  • The Hell’s Rangers Male and Female Gear Sets.
  • The Hell’s Rangers Arsenal of 11 unique Guns.
  • The Hell’s Rangers Truck Mods and Decals
