Phil Spencer Explains Mixer’s Shutdown

Microsoft has surprisingly decided to shut down their video streaming service Mixer, making it official yesterday, fans of Mixer Partners will now have to tune at Facebook Gaming to see their favorite streamers. The Head of Xbox Phil Spencer talked about Microsoft’s decision, he points at the service’s disappointing growth as the doom of the platform.

It became clear that the time needed to grow our own livestreaming community to scale was out of measure with the vision and experiences we want to deliver to gamers now, so we’ve decided to close the operations side of Mixer and help the community transition to a new platform. To better serve our community’s needs, we’re teaming up with Facebook to enable the Mixer community to transition to Facebook Gaming.

Facebook Gaming will make it easy for anyone in the Mixer community to join, if they choose to do so. We will work to transition the Mixer community over the next few weeks. Starting on July 22, all Mixer sites and apps will redirect users to Facebook Gaming. Phil Spencer said.

The elephant in the room is the multi-million deal of Mixer and Tyler ” Ninja Blevins, along with other Mixer Partners like Michael “Shroud” Grzesiek. According to The Verge, Facebook Gaming Head, Vivek Sharma explains that they will be released from their contracts and can decide where they would like to stream next. Facebook Gaming will try to get a hold on the service of Mixer Partners and they promise to negotiate a deal similar to what Microsoft offered.

As reported by GamesIndustry, Microsoft aggressively marketed Mixer in the last year, but the service failed to translate the huge investment into a significant increase in the hours watched on the platform.
