Phil Spencer Teases About Smartphones, xCloud and E3 2019

Phil Spencer Teases About Smartphones, xCloud and E3 2019

Xbox’s boss Phil Spencer has teased a big announcement at this year’s E3 while speaking with Larry Hryb, Xbox Live’s Director of Programming. He also confirms that Playground Games and Rare are currently working on new projects.

“I saw what Playground is working on next, I saw what Rare is working on next, and their continued success with Sea of Thieves.”

While speaking about Sony not attending he revealed Xbox’s approach towards the big event, and between going small or going big he confirms that it will be as “big as we’ve ever been”, and that’s understandable, if I where an executive at Xbox I would be a bit cautious because Sony seems to be planning something huge behind that irrational decision to not participate in the event.

This is going to be a fun E3 for us… we had a discussion internally. Should we go big? Should we save some money? No, we’re going to do our thing and we’re going to go and be as big at E3 as we’ve ever been. And I love that opportunity to be with our fans and the industry… We’re still going through some of the discussions on how much long-term and how much near-term [games] do we talk about… I’m a proponent for being as transparent as can be… I feel really good about our plans… The content that we’ll have will be great and we’ll talk about our future. We’ll talk more about what the Xbox brand means to us… We have millions of Xbox customers… we see them on a phone or another device… We want to make that possible.

When he says teases something big, I understand something revolutionary, and when he talks about the future of Xbox and points at fans and phones, we can now expect an update on Project xCloud and I would bet that their “big” announcement is a confirmation about Xbox Game Pass and Project xCloud working together to stream games on all kind of devices in the near future.

How could I get to this conclusion some might ask, well, maybe the two hours Xbox Game Pass ad at X018 and the will of Xbox to capitalize gaming on mobile devices, they even have a prototype of the controller for mobile devices.

One thing I was doing on holiday was that I was playing games on xCloud… We want to make sure we get it as right as we can. We want to test it… to anyone else on the service, I’m just playing… It’ll be years before this is the primary way people are playing… but let’s think about our future… We should also have these five to ten year views on where things can go.

I’m definitely looking forward to learn more about what games are being developed for the Xbox, specially after Xbox acquired multiple studios in the last couple of months. Probably Xbox Game Pass and Project xCloud will steal the show but it’s worth to note that we as players want to play our games in the best platform available, and while Project xCloud might be the best move for Xbox from an economical standpoint, cloud streaming services will never not be the best way to play games, as it was recently pointed by Nvidia at CES 2019 there will always be input latency. But that’s only my opinion do you think I’m being too harsh with Phil Spencer? Let me know in the comment section below.
