Phil Spencer Teases More Xbox News in August

Xbox boss Phil Spencer recently shared an interview with iJustine, he teases more Xbox news in August as he was “encouraged to be able to talk more”, the main topic seems to be the Xbox Series X’s backward compatibility or the so-called Smart delivery. “I think in August we will have more to say on that.” Spencer says.

Insiders are reportedly claiming that Xbox will announce something much more important than a Smart Delivery update, if the information is accurate, Xbox will be announcing the Xbox Series S, the entry-level next-gen console from Microsoft. The long-rumored Xbox Series S seems to be the ace in the sleeve for the American company to defeat the PlayStation 5, a console that will struggle to maintain a low retail price due to its expensive NVME SSD.

According to Venture Beat‘s sources Microsoft had originally planned to announce Project Lockhart/Xbox Series S in June. However, the announcement was pushed back due to the social movement in the US.

In late June, Microsoft may have confirmed the existence of the rumored Project Lockhart, according to the keen eye of security researcher TitleOs, a”LockhartProfiling” was found in Microsoft’s June 2020 Games Development Kit.

On recent rumors, leaker Eastmen claimed to know the retail price of the Xbox Series S, he claims that Xbox has managed to design a very inexpensive next-gen Xbox that will completely crush PS5 in manufacturing costs.

“Last I heard [it’ll] be half the price of the XSX [Xbox Series X] and last I heard MS [Microsoft] were prepared for a $400 XSX. I am not sure what the final price will be,” said eastmen. “I think if Sony is $500/$600 MS may try to go in at $200/$400/$500 but we will see.”

Lockhart is expected to ditch the optical drive for a more compact design and an overall lower production cost, the console would also have discrete hardware capable of playing next-gen games, delivering around 4 TFLOPs. Lockhart would still conserve some of the key components that boast the Series X for the next generation. The NVMe storage device is still expected to be present at Xbox Lockhart.
