Both next-gen consoles for PlayStation and Xbox have been briefly introduced by Sony and Microsoft, but the studio head at Platinum Games found it hard to get excited for PS5 and Xbox Scarlett that only represent PC-like boxes for games.
Speaking to VGC, Atsushi Inaba said streaming platforms have got more innovative things to offer than what we’ve seen from Sony and Microsoft so far. The developer compared the next-gen consoles to powerful PCs that have got nothing new, so it’s hard to get excited about them. He said:
It’s OK. And by that I mean, I’m sure that things will move faster, graphics will be better and maybe it will be easier with less wait times… that’s good for the consumer. But it’s more of the same, quite frankly, compared to previous generations. It’s nothing that’s disruptive or super innovative, if you ask me.
It’s hard to get excited about stuff that kind of already exists, but has been repurposed to a certain degree. That’s why for me, things like cloud platforms represent innovation and something very, very different – they’re platforms that excite me and where I feel there is a lot more innovation happening.
Platinum Games is currently working on Astral Chain to release exclusively on Switch and after that the studio will give birth to Bayonetta 3 which is again a Switch exclusive title.
