PlayStation 5 Controller Revealed

Sony has just unveiled

the PlayStation 5 controller, called DualSense. Introduced by Hideaki Nishino Senior Vice President, Platform Planning & Management, he explains how DualSense will be able to captivate more of the players’ senses and allow an interactive virtual experience.

We’ve reached an exciting milestone with PlayStation 5, as we’re starting to ship our new controller in its final design to developers who are implementing its unique features into their games. After thoughtful consideration, we decided to keep much of what gamers love about DualShock 4 intact, while also adding new functionality and refining the design.

Sony has decided to innovate in the design of the new DualSense controller, a two tone appearance is the main design of the console, and might indicate a similar idea to be used in the PlayStation 5, a conservative location of the left analogue stick, a location that hardcore PlayStation fans will love, the light bar has also been redesigned.

The new PlayStation 5 controller adds a built in microphone and speaker, the audio capabilities of the controller should be upgraded from the previous gen DS4. The share button has been replaced for a new “Create” button, Nishino says that the new button represents Sony’s intention of adding new ways for players to create “epic gameplay content”. More information about the “Create” functionality of the PlayStation 5 will be revealed later.

Haptic feedback is confirmed, this new feature will be able to deliver “powerful sensations”, the example given by Hideaki Nishino, is that players would be able to feel “the slow grittiness of driving a car through mud”. Nishino did not added further explanation on how will this be accomplished. A big improvement from controllers already on the market is that, L2 and R2 buttons of DualSense are adaptive triggers, this meas that players will be able to feel a feedback determined on the action being executed. Nishino’s example is that players can “truly feel the tension of your actions, like when drawing a bow to shoot an arrow.” Another good example would be Sony’s Gran Turismo Sport, the game could benefit from the adaptive triggers to add some feedback of the braking system of a car, greatly improving the gameplay.

The designers were then able to draw the lines of how the exterior of the controller would look and feel, with a challenge of making the controller feel smaller than it really looks. In the end, we changed the angle of the hand triggers and also made some subtle updates to the grip. We also took thoughtful consideration into ways to maintain a strong battery life for DualSense’s rechargeable battery, and to lessen the weight of the controller as much as possible as new features were added.

Hideaki Nishino also claims that the DualSense does not feel bulky as the designers worked closely with the hardware engineers, DualSense is blend between functionality and design and from what Nishino says, nothing is compromised. “ The designers were then able to draw the lines of how the exterior of the controller would look and feel, with a challenge of making the controller feel smaller than it really looks.”

CEO Jim Ryan also took part in the reveal of DualSense, he confirms the Holiday 2020 release date for the console, he also said that the console design will be revealed in “the coming months”.

“DualSense marks a radical departure from our previous controller offerings and captures just how strongly we feel about making a generational leap with PS5. The new controller, along with the many innovative features in PS5, will be transformative for games – continuing our mission at PlayStation to push the boundaries of play, now and in the future. To the PlayStation community, I truly want to thank you for sharing this exciting journey with us as we head toward PS5’s launch in Holiday 2020. We look forward to sharing more information about PS5, including the console design, in the coming months.” Jim Ryan, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment.
