PlayStation 5 Expansion Bay To Be Enabled Soon

Sony is reportedly enabling PlayStation 5 ‘s expansion bay this summer via a firmware update. Users will be able to use third-party SSDs.

Sources have told Bloomberg that the new firmware update will also unlock higher cooling-fan speeds to ensure that the console doesn’t overheat, this could mean that the PS5 will get significantly noisy if the reports are accurate. PlayStation showcased the expansion bay for an optional M.2 SSD last year during the PlayStation 5 teardown video.

“As previously announced, we are working to enable M.2 SSD storage expansion for PlayStation 5. The timing has not been announced and details will be shared later,” a Sony spokesman said.

Is important to mention that Sony built their next-gen console with a customized architecture that improves the performances of the M.2 drive, this meant that the console could not support reading/running PlayStation 5 games from an external SSD as the PlayStation 4 could. Sony confirmed that older PlayStation 4 can be supported via an external USB 3.0 HDD, but fans could be getting impatient and hungry to install more next-gen games on their system.

Enabling users to expand the storage of the PlayStation 5 is a quality-of-life update that was badly needed, games like Call of Duty can take over 133GB of storage size of your SSD, the next-gen console comes with a custom SSD and only features about 667GB of storage available for games, apps, and media. Certainly, PlayStation chose speed over storage size and we can expect that upcoming games like Horizon: Forbidden West, Gran Turismo 7, or Final Fantasy VII Remake with all its DLCs will take the most of the PlayStation 5’s internal storage drive.

Great news has been shared this month for PlayStation fans, the Play at Home initiative is returning next month with Insomniac’ Games 2016 hit, Ratchet & Clank. PlayStation Plus subscribers will also be thrilled to learn that Final Fantasy VII Remake is included in March’s free-to-play lineup. PlayStation 5 players will receive Maquette.
