and Microsoft released their consoles only last year and already we have seen some pretty high numbers hit in terms of sales. However, as it always is, only one system can lead in sales. Continuing on the front the strong showing with their PlayStation 4, it looks like Sony is currently up in profits. On the other hand, while the Xbox is lagging behind in total sales, there are a lot of factors why these numbers might not be indicative going forward.
According to data acquired by the website Finbold:
Sony’s Playstation 5 has generated an estimated $3.8 billion in revenue from selling about 8.6 million consoles with an average price of $449.99 per unit. Microsoft’s Xbox X/S revenue stands at an estimated $2.04 billion globally, selling 5.12 million units at an estimated $399.99 per console price. Cumulatively, both consoles generated revenue of about $5.92 billion.
A key reason why these numbers may be up is exclusives. While the PlayStation 5 has only seen a handful of these, with Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart only days away, The showing on exclusives going into the generation was considered stronger. This could change, however, with Microsoft making strong plays to sure up their first-party market. While E3 is incoming this play has ensured that the console has LOTS of upcoming titles but has yet to offer any major window to expect them.
A major shortage of Semiconductors has also lead to a shortage of consoles for gamers the world over. Although stocks on both consoles are replenished occasionally it has been nowhere near enough to satisfy gamers on both sides of the aisle. There were also temporary shutdowns on several manufacturing plants also delayed production.
The numbers both companies have produced have been incredibly promising considering the state the world has been in. We can only expect these numbers will grow even larger once gamers can get their hands on the systems.
