PlayStation 5 To be Backwards Compatible With DS4

According to Respawn First, the PlayStation 5 will be backwards compatible with the DualShock 4 and VR controllers. Respawn First neglects to divulge the source of this report, but claims that two developers have leaked this information to them.

Reports also suggest that “most PlayStation 5 games will support hardware backward compatibility”.

“Not allowing the use of DS4 with PlayStation 5 would mean users must invest toward new controllers for the console, and that most likely won’t sit well with the community and makes very little sense. Moreover, Microsoft is doing the same with Xbox Series X, allowing old-gen controllers to work with the new console”

Like all rumors, this should be taken with a grain of salt, all the information shared by Respawn First is unofficial. Last year, a leaked photo of the PlayStation 5 dev kits leaked online, and the DualShock 4 appeared in the image. This suggests that either backwards compatibility is supported, or that the DualShock 5 won’t be so much different than its predecessor.

Below is a patent image for the Sony DualShock 5, PlayStation button removal and the addition of two pads behind the analog sticks are the only changes made. This suggests that if the developers wants it, DS4 backwards compatibility could be easily included.

The PlayStation 5 is scheduled to release in holiday 2020. Sony hasn’t announced a release date or the pricing of the system, but as Leonid Melikhov reported, Sony might have something big planned for the upcoming CES (Consumer Electronics Show) that will take place from January 7-10 in Las Vegas. Here is what Sony teases for CES 2020: “The future is coming… At CES 2020 Sony is unveiling a unique vision of the future, bringing creativity and technology together like never before to unleash new sensations and emotions.”
