PlayStation Now Gets 1080p Support

Sony Interactive Entertainment announced today that PlayStation Now will begin streaming games at 1080p resolution.

The upgrade will be rolling out in the next few weeks across Europe, US, Canada, and Japan, where the service is now available. Is important to mention that not all games will receive the resolution boost as Sony explains that the new resolution will be present for “1080p capable games”, confirming that a limited number of titles will stream in 1080p.

The new resolution boost is a crucial step for Sony to stay close to PlayStation Now’s competitors. Currently, Amazon Luna is capable of streaming in 1080p, Google Stadia can go as high as 4K. Meanwhile, Xbox Cloud Gaming announced in March to be testing 1080p support.

PlayStation Now features an ever-growing catalog of PS2, PS3, and PS4 titles for stream and download. For April 2021 the platform added Marvel’s Avengers, Borderlands 3, and The Long Dark. Players on PS4 can pick from over 300 PS4 games to download and install to their PS4 console.

In recent news, PlayStation‘s CEO Jim Ryan affirms that Sony Interactive Entertainment is working on a cloud gaming experience that will “be unique and only on PlayStation.”

Jim Ryan explained that PlayStation is still “having conversations with [Microsoft] about exchanging ideas,” for a wider cloud gaming strategy.

We’re still talking to them about exchanging ideas, and there’s some very interesting stuff, so when the time is right, we’ll announce our cloud strategy.

We could conceivably use the cloud for our technical infrastructure, but the cloud gaming experience we’re offering will be unique and only on PlayStation.
