In an update many long-time PSN users have been waiting for, Sony announced that the ability to change your PSN ID name is finally live. While there are some stipulations to be aware of, the first time players wish to change their name is completely free.
The new name change can be taken care either on the PS4 or on a web browser. As mentioned, the first change is free, but any other changes after that will cost $9.99, while PS Plus users are charged $4.99.
There was also some minor concern regarding potential game released before April 1, 2018 might not adapt properly to the name change. Sony released a list of games that were play tested with the new feature and all seemed to work properly.
Sony held a long FAQ of questions and answers on their blog post that should clear up most concerns players may have. Issues that may occur when changing your ID may include:
Players will also have the option of reverting back to their old ID as that name will always stay attached to your account. Friends will also still be able to find you after you change your name as there is an option to have your old ID displayed next to your new ID for a 30 day period.
The new update is said to roll out later today and can be accessed through both the PS4 and a web browser.
