PlayStation To Support Variable Refresh Rate at a Future Update

According to an updated FAQ, Sony informs PlayStation 5 users that a future update will enable the support of Variable Refresh Rate on supported monitors and TVs through the console’s HDMI 2.1 port.

Under the section titled “Does PS5 support VRR”, Sony explains:

“PS5 hardware supports Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) through HDMI 2.1. After a future system software update, PS5 owners will be able to use the feature of compatible TVs when playing games that support VRR.”

VRR is a feature that is currently available on Microsoft’s Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One X. If used right the technique could allow the PS5 to output a 4K 120fps game up to 8k. The feature could also be used to stabilize the framerates of more demanding games such as Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War, who players have reported lackluster performance on some maps when played on PS5.

Variable Refresh Rate is a new addition to HDMI 2.1 which enables capable displays to be refreshed as fast as the console can render images. The technique could potentially eliminate tearing, increasing smoothness, and reducing latency. To implement the feature is crucial that players know which of the TVs and monitors support the feature. In the case of Sony, the company has announced ‘Ready for PlayStation 5’ TVs.

The Sony Bravia TVs are a solid choice for the PlayStation 5, the XH90 4K HDR Full Array LED and ZH8 8K HDR Full Array LED models line ups are expensive but probably the best choice for your PS5. The XH90 displays gameplay images of up to 4K resolution at 120 fps with a very low input lag of 7.2ms. The ZH8 is also capable of displaying 8K resolution images while also showcasing 4K resolution gameplay images at 120 fps.
