Portability Mode A Focus For Pokemon Sword And Shield

It seems Nintendo is keen on keeping players and fans of the Pokemon game series well-adapted to the handheld mode featured on the Switch. During a financial report form Nintendo, company president Shuntaro Furukawa details one major difference between last year’s Pokemon Let’s Go titles and this year’s upcoming mainline titles, Pokemon Sword and Shield.

“Pokemon Let’s Go Pikachu and Pokemon Let’s Go Eevee, which were released in November of last year, are designed to highlight the fun of Nintendo Switch in TV mode, for example by waving the controller at the TV screen to capture Pokemon.

Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield are being developed to emphasize the fun of playing Nintendo Switch in handheld mode. We want these games to be played not only by longtime Pokemon fans, but also by consumers whose first encounter with the series was on a dedicated video game platform with Pokemon Let’s Go Pikachu and Pokemon Let’s Go Eevee.” – Nintendo President, Shuntaro Furukawa

While Pokemon Let’s Go was a remake of the earlier titles in the series taking players back to the Kanto region, Sword and Shield are continuing the series forward. Let’s Go was a collaboration of classic Pokemon games mixed with the popular mobile title, Pokemon Go – where capturing Pokemon is more emphasized than random battle encounters.

Pokemon Sword and Shield is supposedly more focused on the gameplay Pokemon fans are familiar with, ditching the focus of motion controls in favor of a more traditional gaming approach. For those who were a bit thrown off from the motion control capturing mechanics, this seems to be the Pokemon Switch entry you’ve been waiting for.

Pokemon Sword and Shield are both set to release later this year exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
