“Proof of Concept” build Revealed for The Last Bastion

It was revealed by KnightMayor LLC, the ‘Proof of Concept’ build of The Last Bastion, in development initially for Windows PC. KnightMayor, LLC is an independent game developer based in Austin, Texas, focusing on story based RPGs.  The “team” is comprised of a single ex-BioWare designer with a crazy dream to make games of the style he loves to play.

Check out the “Proof of Concept” video of The Last Bastion, featuring an early look at the concept of the game with some gameplay footage:

“The land of Nocturne, peaceful for generations, has been invaded by a powerful and exotic force.  Seemingly overnight, almost all of Nocturne is occupied leaving only one stronghold – The city of Mooncrest – The Last Bastion.  Can these overwhelmed forces rally together to learn the secrets and strategies necessary to defeat a mysterious army with mythological powers?

The Last Bastion is a story driven, Tactical RPG with core gameplay features inspired by the Sega Genesis classic – Warsong (Langrisser).  Assisting the gameplay is a storytelling system designed to convey the narrative, reveal the characters and explain the evolving objectives during a combat stage.

The storytelling of the TRPG will be fairly simple: Linear story told as dialogs between characters. Dialogs like the one above will be used:

  • Between stages to tell the overarching narrative while exploring characters’ backgrounds and personalities
  • At the beginning of some stages to establish stage goals
  • Mid stage when needed to explain some stage objective changes (surprise objectives)
  • End of stage to transition from one stage to the next scene (as seen in the GIF)

Disgaea fans will see a heavy influence from Disgaea 5. As mentioned in an earlier blog, I was focusing on both Disgaea 5 and Fire Emblem Fates as influences for this system, but once I started mocking up the interface, the Disgaea layout was more functional. The layout differences of the two were driven by the format each were designed to be played: Disgaea 5 was designed for a TV/Monitor (PS4) while Fire Emblem Fates for handheld (3DS).  Since I am developing as a PC title (hopefully, this will expand to other platforms), the Disgaea style made a better basis for the storytelling system.”
