Housemarque’s PS5 exclusive shooter, Returnal has been delayed from its original release date on March 19, 2021, to April 30, 2021.
The decision was announced by PlayStation who revealed that the delay was needed in order to give the development team extra time to polish the game “to the level of quality players expect from Housemarque”.
Returnal transforms roguelike gameplay into a third-person shooter where players fight to survive a hostile planet that changes with every death. Check the gameplay trailer here:
Through relentless roguelike gameplay, you’ll discover that just as the planet changes with every cycle, so do the items at your disposal. Every loop offers new combinations, forcing you to push your boundaries and approach combat with a different strategy each time.
Returnal is a third-person shooter exclusive to the PlayStation 5. You play as Selene, who crash-lands on an alien planet called Atropos. Unfortunately for Selene, the planet is home to a hostile ancient race of aliens which she has to fight against to survive. The somewhat unique gameplay twist that Returnal offers is that when Selene dies, she is brought back to life, but the planet around her will mysteriously change. Housemarque says this offers “extreme replayability” and it will force you into rethinking your combat strategy each time she is revived.
Housemarque’s newest project is a big challenge for a studio that only counts with over 80 employees, the Finish developer announced in early 2020 that Stormdivers’ development was displaced on a new, more ambitious project. Returnal has been in pre-production since 2017, the game is the biggest project of the team.
Returnal is one of the most underhyped games to be released this year, the game’s announcement took place during The Future of Gaming where it was also announced Gran Turismo 7, Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Horizon Forbidden, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, and Demon’s Souls.
