PS5 Redesign Will Come in 2022 Claims Report

According to industry sources, Sony Interactive Entertainment is already planning a redesign for the PS5. The first revision is expected to start being produced between Q2 and Q3 2022.

According to DigiTimes, suppliers are already told to start the preparations for the new PS5, however, the console won’t get any smaller, Sony will only make an internal revision with the biggest change being a new ‘semi-customized’ 6nn CPU from AMD.

PlayStation expects that the new hardware revision will significantly reduce the production cost of the console, the current CPU is built on a 5nm architecture.

Is important to make clear that Sony is unlikely to reduce the price of the console as a result of the savings, but the revision could allow PlayStation to start making a profit from the consoles.

Renowned analyst, Dr. Serkan Toto / Kantan Games Inc. commented on the report stating that it’s ‘spotty’

Taiwanese news outlet with spotty track record Digitimes: Sony aims for a PS5 redesign for 2Q or 3Q 2022: digitimes.com/news/a20210506 (paywall: and yes, I am subscribed) It says the next PS5 will come with a “new semi-customized” 6nm CPU from AMD. 5nm is said to be too costly.

Back in February Sony Interactive Entertainment’s CFO, Hiroki Totoki revealed that manufacturing plants are slowed down due to a shortage in the semiconductors needed for the PS5. Semiconductors are a key component for several devices like smartphones, laptops, vehicles, and digital cameras.

“It is difficult for us to increase the production of the PS5 amid the shortage of semiconductors and other components,” Sony chief financial officer Hiroki Totoki said at a press briefing.

Sony is selling the consoles at a loss, but the company is recouping its investment thanks to software sales, PlayStation Plus, and PlayStation Now subscriptions.

“We continue to do everything in our power to ship as many units as possible to customers who are waiting for a PS5” Said Totoki.
