In an interview with Famitsu, via Siliconera, PlayStation’s CEO Jim Ryan confirmed that PS5 features 99 percent, of the PS4’s library, however, the console will not support PS3, PS2 or PS1 games.
Famitsu asked the executive a direct question, “will there be compatibility with PS1, PS2, and PS3 titles?” Ryan answered:
“We keep in mind the engineering specialized for the PS5, as we produced the device,” Jim Ryan explains. “In the midst of that, the PS4 already has 100 million players; we thought they ought to want to play PS4 titles on the PS5 as well indeed, so we included compatibility with the PS4.”
“While implementing that, we also focused our efforts on taking in the high-speed SSD and the new controller DualSense at the same time. So, unfortunately, we couldn’t reach the implementation of such compatibilities.”
Speaking to The Washington Post Ryan stated that PlayStation 4 is still important and will remain being relevant in the upcoming years. This also confirms PlayStation’s needs to make a prudent transition into the net-genaration, something that big AAA game developers will embrace.
“The PS4 community will continue to be incredibly important to us for three or four years,” Ryan said. “Many will transition to PS5, we hope if we do our job well, but tens of millions will still be engaged with the PS4.”
During the technical reveal of PS5
, lead designer Mark Cerny explained that PlayStation’s next-gen console is designed on similar internal structures, this allows the backwards compatibility with PS4 games much easier than previous generation of PlayStation.
Sony recently revealed PlayStation Plus Collection, PS Plus subcribers on PlayStation 5 will be able to download and play a curated library of PS4 games that defined the generation, Batman Arkham Knight, Bloodborne, Fallout 4, God of War, Monster Hunter: World, Persona 5, “and many more”. The PS Plus Collection will be an added benefit to the existing PS4 benefits that PS Plus members receive for a single subscription price.
