Initially launching in May of this year Japanese developer Capcom has announced that Resident Evil Village, the latest in the mainline series of the Resident Evil series, has reached 5 million total units sold. Thanks to this the game has been considered a major success for Capcom and will surely help usher in many more games in the series, not like that was in doubt either way.
To be specific, Capcom is focusing on the number of shipped units that they have sold to retailers, and not the number sold to consumers. Since developer’s profits come from selling to retailers this is usually the number focused on when boasting high sales numbers.
The importance of these numbers is just how quickly Resident Evil Village was able to achieve them. Despite only being on the market for a few months Village has already managed to become one of the best-selling games in the series. Capcom also added that Village is already selling at a higher rate than any other entry before it.
In a press release for this sales milestone, Capcom stated:
Utilizing the company’s proprietary RE Engine, which made a simultaneous release on both the new and current generation of consoles possible, the game captivated players with a spectacular play experience featuring stunning, photorealistic visuals and cutting-edge 3D audio. This led worldwide shipments of the game to surpass 5 million units at a quicker pace than its preceding entry in the series.
Announced at E3, Resident Evil Village will be getting DLC content at some point in the future. This content is currently in development but has still yet to be showcased fully. A multiplayer game that will be sold separately, or free through a code if you bought Village, Resident Evil Re:Verse, has also been delayed several times and is currently slated for a 2022 release.
