Apparently BioShock 4, or something akin to that, is reportedly in development at a top-secret San Francisco 2K studio. This reveal arrives as part of a much larger story by Kotaku news editor and industry insider Jason Schreier, that details the tumultuous story of the Mafia III developer Hangar 13.
While Schreier’s details on a new BioShock aren’t very substantive, here are the excerpts fans will want to pay attention to:
“Some left voluntarily; others were let go or asked to move. Some went to other game companies; others moved to the top-secret studio next door to work on an unannounced new BioShock game…”
“Next door, a small group of people were working on a project code-named Parkside, quietly recruiting from across the video game industry for a game so secret, they wouldn’t even tell their colleagues at Hangar 13 about it. Word got out, though, that it was in fact a new game in one of the most interesting shooter franchises of the past decade: BioShock.”
As Newsweek stated:
Unfortunately, there’s not much more we know about this Bioshock game including its title or even its expected release platform. If Parkside aims to take cue from its predecessor, BioShock: Infinite, the project could take as long as five years to finish. By that time, gamers might not even be playing on PS4 or Xbox One. While the scope of the project is not known, the intense secrecy suggests 2K aims to make a big splash with the return of this juggernaut franchise.
After all, even though it’s been half a decade since Infinite graced store shelves, 2K has made a conscious effort to ensure BioShock’s trademark style and mechanics are never forgotten. Speculation about the possibility of a new BioShock game began shortly after BioShock: The Collection released on current-gen platforms in 2016. At that time, conventional wisdom suggested 2K may have been testing the waters to see if audiences hungered for a fourth installment. If Parkside is still being mentioned in hushed tones in 2018, we imagine that prior study returned with affirmative sales results.
