As the Playstation 4 enters its fifth year since it launched worldwide, questions about when the PS5 will appear, are starting to rise on the Internet. But these questions are hard to answer, as the release of the PS4 Pro broke the order of the console generations. However, new rumors are starting to show up as we get closer to this year’s E3, which suggests that the release of the new Playstation console is not far away as we thought.
Industry insider Marcus Stellars revealed new information, that Playstation 5 dev kits were sent to third-party developers earlier this year. This can only mean that Sony will start production of the Playstation 5 soon. But considering the success of the Playstation 4 console and the recent release of the Playstation 4 Pro, it’s likely that Sony will take their time before they announce their next generation console.
Here’s the Tweet by industry insider Marcus Stellars:
VG 24/7 said in an article on their website:
“Dev kits are typically PCs or specialised hardware running a specific set of specs that platform holders believe mirror the specs of their upcoming consoles. They don’t always match up, and the specs can and do change, but they’re a close approximation designed to help developers get an idea of what to shoot for with their in-development games.
A 2018 rollout is a bit earlier than expected, but seeing as Sellars specifically mentions third-party teams, it’s safe to assume first-party studios have had them for a while. This could just be an early hardware prototype, or the real deal, depending on when Sony is planning to start the next generation.
A 2019 or 2020 launch for PS5 now seems likely, but this has not been verified so take it with a grain of salt.”
But before fans get too excited, it’s important to note that none of this information has been confirmed by Sony. And until Sony decides to reveal the PlayStation 5 itself, fans should be sure to take any claims about the console with a grain of salt.
Patcher said in a podcast about the Playstation 5:
“Sony is making so much money with the PS4 that I think they’ll continue to milk it as long as they can milk it. And I think the natural extension of that is the PS4 Pro becomes the default PS4, and they just knock that price down to $250 when they can and they keep selling it — a ton of those. The PS5 is probably going to be their real 4K device, and so it just feels to me that they’re not going to launch the PS5 until sales momentum for the PS4 slows, and it just hasn’t. So you certainly get through 2017, 2018, and I just don’t see it slowing in 2018 which should prop them to launch something in 2019. If it slows in 2019, they’re probably launching in 2020.”
