Wasting no time kicking off the Gamecom Opening Night Live! event, the first trailer to be showcased at the event was the long-awaited reboot for the Saint Row Franchise. Simply called Saints Row, the cinematic trailer does offer some familiar over-the-top quirkiness fans of the series might expect, with a very fresh new look.
Set in the midwest in a new city, the trailer opens up with a vast desert filled with cacti. Through the trailer, we follow four characters with one of them being the new ‘boss’ that players will take the role of. Each plays a role in following a gang, indicated by the color yellow, as they commit a drug deal. This harkens back to the earliest games in the series where players tried to take over the city by eliminating rival gangs.
Of course, like everything in Saints Row the plan goes wrong pretty quickly which devolves into a chase across the city and some over-the-top craziness. This culminates with a showdown between two characters and their multi-rocket launchers. While the trailer does offer a thematic look at classic Saints Row it does not offer any look at if the previous iteration of the Boss or the Saints will appear as rumors have suggested.
After this trailer, a second shorter trailer was shown to offer a look at gameplay. While it does not offer MUCH it is pretty much what I think most people want from a new Saints Row game.
It was revealed during this that we do not have long to wait for the game, as a release date of February 25, 2022, was given. One thing is for sure, this will definitely not be the superhuman, alien-bashing game that was Saints Row IV.
