SIE CEO Comments on Bringing Sunset Overdrive to PS4

Earlier this week Sony announced that they acquired veteran developer Insomniac Games. Insomniac has worked largely in favor with Sony over the course of their illustrious history, most notably the recent Marvel’s Spider-Man on the PS4 which released last year. However, there is one major title that never graced a PlayStation console – that title being the Microsoft published, vibrant and edgy action-adventure, Sunset Overdrive.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter regarding the acquisition, Sony PlayStation CEO Shawn Layden commented on bringing aboard such a talented developing team to Sony’s Worldwide Studios team. One notable topic Layden spoke about was one of the more intriguing aspects of the acquisition that many PS4 owners are no doubt curious about, which would be bringing over the Microsoft exclusive to the PlayStation brand.

“That was a great experience for Insomniac, and they learned a lot through that, as well. As far as the IP itself, we really haven’t turned over the files on that one to see what that actually means, to be honest. We like what they’ve been doing in the Spider-Man franchise, and things like Ratchet & Clank are certainly vital series in the present and future. That’s what we’re concentrating on.” – Shawn Layden, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO

While Layden’s remarks initially seem as though bringing Sunset Overdrive over to the PlayStation side seems unlikely, it’s possible that he could be referring to not making the game a dedicated series in the PlayStation universe. He doesn’t outright neglect the possibility of at least porting the original Sunset Overdrive over to, say, the PS4 – but instead doesn’t sound positive on having Insomniac put in the hours in continuing the series, especially since the PlayStation brand has a pretty dedicated fan base to both Ratchet and Clank and Spider-Man.

There’s also the fan-favorite Resistance series which has been warranting demands for, at the very least, a trilogy remaster of current gen consoles. This is certainly a possibility now more than ever, specially if the fans continue to demand something in the resistance universe. I for one, would love to see that series continue, considering the one genre the PS4 exclusive line up lacks is first-person shooters.

All in all, it’s a mighty acquisition from Sony and it will be exciting to see what else comes to the PlayStation brand with their newly acquired studio.
