Sniper Elite 5 Announced During ID@Xbox

Sniper Elite 5

was announced today during the ID@Xbox live stream, returning players to the role of a sniper during World War II. The announcement, despite being in an Xbox-themed stream, promised that the game will have a simultaneous release across multiple platforms when the game is released in 2022.

The trailer offers our first look at the US Rangers who will be starring in the game as they take on what begins as a standard mission into Brittany, France in 1994. Their mission starts off simple with them being tasked with tweaking several fortified walls in the area, this changes however when it is discovered that a Nazi project known as Operation Kraken is taking place in the area.

This leads to the main character of our story, Karl Fairburne, making it his new mission to destroy this operation by any means necessary. And of course, when I say any means necessary what I mean is by sniping everybody involved, MAAAAYYYYBBBEEE stabbing a person or two if you absolutely need to.

Developer Rebellion is leaning heavily into real-world locations on the next outing of the Sniper Elite franchise, promising “a living, immersive environment” for players to experience. Enriching this experience is the use of photogrammetry which is digital environments that use actual spaces using actual spaces as their templates.

This time around there will be more ways to traverse these environments as well. The game will feature zip lines, improved climbing, and new sliding mechanics all for the player to utilize as they attempt to set up their kills. Players will also need to mix and match their equipment layout for each area, as each location will offer different challenges and focus for your sniper to overcome.

Co-op play will also be improved this time around, allowing players to “share ammo and items, give orders, and heal each other.” The game will allow you players to quickly join a player and offer them aid, or even invade another player’s game as an Axis sniper trying to take them out similar to Deathloop.

For players that might have been nervous, the game will still feature their signature kill cam with Rebellion stating “Bones deflect bullets unpredictably, ripping a new path through enemy bodies. SMGs and pistols can also trigger kill cams, including multiple shots in dramatic slow motion.” The company feels that have outdone themselves with the feature this time around.

Sniper Elite 5 will be available for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC (via Steam, the Epic Games Store, and the Windows Store) sometime in 2022.
