Sony has finally backed down from their arrogant stance against cross-play after facing huge backlash from gamers, the press, and developers alike and will now allow cross-platform play for people playing Fortnite on PS4 to compete with those playing on Xbox and Nintendo Switch.
In a statement that Sony Interactive Entertainment’s president posted at PlayStation Blog’s Website, This is what he had to say about the future of cross-play on PlayStation Platforms:
“Following a comprehensive evaluation process, SIE has identified a path toward supporting cross-platform features for select third party content,” Sony said in a post to the PlayStation Blog. “We recognize that PS4 players have been eagerly awaiting an update, and we appreciate the community’s continued patience as we have navigated through this issue to find a solution.”
On top of cross-platform play between PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch, this beta test will also unlock cross-platform progression in Fortnite. That means if you have a Switch and a PS4, an Xbox One and PS4, or all three, you can play Fortnite across all of them and have access to your collection of cosmetics and your Battle Pass progress. This also means that your purchases will be available across platforms as well, so you can spend money on a Switch or Xbox and have access to that content on PS4.
That’s a really big deal — “Fortnite” is the first-ever game to allow players on all platforms to play together. As Sony puts it: “This represents a major policy change for Sony Interactive Entertainment.”
The beta will support cross-play between PlayStation 4, Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows, and Mac, aiming to ensure the service’s quality, while also keeping an eye on the “user experience from both a technical and social perspective”.
As Sony indicates, this represents a major policy change for the company and it will be interesting to see how the situation develops. For now, though, Switch fans can finally play with their Fortnite friends on PS4 – and that’s something to celebrate.
