According to reports, Sony Corporation has just acquired a minority stake of Epic Games valued at $250 millions. Sony confirmed that with this partnership, the Japanese giant is looking forward to “broaden their collaboration” with Epic Games and establish a “close relationship between the two companies.”
Sony Corporation President and CEO Kenichiro Yoshida suggested that Epic’s engine and their technology in video games production will be very important for Sony and the next-generation of video games.
“Epic’s powerful technology in areas such as graphics places them at the forefront of game engine development with Unreal Engine and other innovations”…”Through our investment, we will explore opportunities for further collaboration with Epic to delight and bring value to consumers and the industry at large, not only in games, but also across the rapidly evolving digital entertainment landscape.”
Founder and CEO of Epic also shared a few word about the important deal:
“Sony and Epic have both built businesses at the intersection of creativity and technology, and we share a vision of real-time 3D social experiences leading to a convergence of gaming, film, and music,” … “Together we strive to build an even more open and accessible digital ecosystem for all consumers and content creators alike.”
Both companies collaborated for Unreal Engine V demo, Lumen in the Land of Nanite, a gameplay trailer that showcased the capabilities of the PlayStation 5, as well as the new technology behind the newest Unreal Engine.
PlayStation fans can expect several next-gen games being developed with Unreal Engine 5, the powerful and advanced engine has introduced a new virtualized micropolygon geometry technology that allows the creation of as much “geometric detail as the eye can see, this technology is called Nanite.
With Nanite, the PlayStation 5 can potentially display a million triangles in just a portion of what’s been shown on screen, over a billion triangles of source geometry can be displayed in each frame. Lumen is also a new technology introduced in Unreal Engine V, it will allow the PlayStation 5 to feature fully dynamic global illumination technology that immediately reacts to scene and light changes.
Is still uncertain how the Xbox Series X will be able to support the new technologies of Unreal Engine V, Lumen in the Land of Nanite was specifically developed for the PlayStation 5’s SSD that is significantly faster than the Xbox’s.
