Sony Cuts PS5 Production Through March

The parts shortage that has plagued the Next-Generation of consoles through their first year on the market appears to be taking its toll yet again. This time it appears that Sony will be cutting their planned production of the PlayStation 5 for the holiday season and through to March 2022 by at least one million units.

For those searching to finally get their hands on the latest PlayStation consoles either for themselves or somebody else, the console will still be available with rumors that GameStop and other stores have been saving units for their Black Friday sales. Unfortunately, this will mean that people need to be more vigilant in any attempt to secure the system.

According to a new report from Bloomberg, Sony had initially planned to ship around 16 million units before the end of March 2022. This would put the full amount available at closer to 15 million, though this number could grow with the issues cited being “logistics issues and part shortages,” which of course has been one of the biggest issues keeping the system from being readily available. Another issue was that it launched during the Covid-19 Pandemic, which caused many units to be sold online, making them easily accessible to scalpers.

While these parts shortages have been prevalent since the Summer of 2020, according to Sony’s chief financial officer Hiroki Totoki these issues have become even worse for the company at this point in time. Despite these issues, the PlayStation 5 became the fastest in the long line of systems to reach 10 million units sold. That being said, it is hard to know how many of these units went to gamers looking to play them and not scalpers looking to sell them.

If it is any solace, Sony is not alone in this struggle. Both Nintendo and Microsoft have had a similarly rough time getting units out to the public. Some experts have estimated that these shortages might last into the well into 2022.
