Sony Reportedly Interested in Acquiring Leyou Technologies

According to a new report from financial news website, Bloomberg, Sony is working close with a financial adviser to plan the acquisition of Leyou Technologies, the parent company of Splash Damage and Digital Extremes. Apparently, there will be an intense bidding war for the Hong Kong gaming company, PlayStation seems to be in the lead in the interest of acquiring the firm.

Sources have told Bloomberg, that one of the potential buyers will be decided by Leyou’s Yuk, and the sale could be done before August.

The Japanese tech giant is working with a financial adviser on the potential offer for Leyou, said the people, asking not to be identified because the matter is private. In May, the Chinese gaming firm confirmed it had received a non-binding takeover offer from Shenzhen-listed rival Zhejiang Century Huatong Group Co., after months of buyout talks with other bidders including iDreamSky Technology Holdings Ltd.

So, who is exactly Leyou, and why the company has managed to increase their market appreciation by 20 percent in 2020 readers might question themselves. The success of Leyou comes from F2P shooters like Warframe and Dirty Bomb. Leyou is also collaborating with Amazon Games Studios for the production of a new The Lord of the Rings videogame.

Sony has recently been aiming to beef up its content arsenal as the tech giant’s chief executive officer Kenichiro Yoshida believes that would in turn strengthen the value of its branded consumer electronics hardware. That includes PlayStation 5, the new video game console that the company plans to launch at the end of this year.

By acquiring Splash Damage, PlayStation will get a hold on the team that made Gear Tactics and Dirty Bomb, the studio is also known for their contribution to Batman: Arkham Origins, Gears of War 4, and Gears 5.

Digital Extremes on the other hand is perhaps a more renowned studio in the industry, the team worked close with Epic Games for the creation of the Unreal series, and one of Steam’s best F2P shooters, Warframe.
