Sony Patents Robot Companion That Reacts To Emotions

IGN has spotted

a patent from Sony Interactive Entertainment that reveals a new idea to develop a robot that will react to the player’s emotion while he is playing a game. The patent reveals that the fuzzy robot don’t have a mouth but can move it’s head and feet in reaction to the player’s emotions. Similar to R.O.B. from Nintendo, the Sony’s robot will be able to play games with the player. An example was given by in the patent, the robot could control the “opponent team of a baseball game being played by the user.”

Interestingly, the robot will have a “feeling deduction unit” capable of detecting and reacting to the owner’s emotions,” joy, anger, love and surprise” this would be accomplished by a biological sensor capable of tracking the player’s heart rate and sweat.

“It is expected that the user’s affinity with the robot is increased and motivation for playing a game is enhanced by the robot viewing the gameplay next to the user and being pleased or sad together with the user. Further, regarding not only the game but also a movie, a television program, or the like, it is expected that the user may enjoy content more by viewing the content with the robot as compared to the case of viewing it alone.”
The patent also reveals the robot’s “love index” this will change as the player interacts with the robot in moments of emotional tension. Basically, this would the robot know if the player wants the interaction or be left alone. The device would quickly react to the “life rhythm” of the owner and would kindly advise players to go to bed if he senses fatigue in the owner, of course, only if there is a strong bond between man and machine.
Sony has patented a new robot companion that will be able to tell the players’ emotion and react accordingly
