Sony Reportedly Discontinuing Several PS4 Models

According to Video Games Chronicles, Sony is discontinuing five models of PlayStation 4 in Japan.

As spotted by Twitter user Cheesemeister, there is a Japanese retailer that its warning customers that they won’t be available to restock some editions of the PS4, these are the five models to be discontinued:

  • PS4 500GB Glacier White
  • PS4 1TB Jet Black
  • PS4 1TB Glacier White
  • PS4 2TB Jet Black
  • PS4 Pro 1TB Glacier White

Cheesemeister’s information arrives after the official PlayStation Direct Store warned customers that the 1TB PS4 Pro will no longer be restocked. The official statement has now been inexplicably deleted from the listing of the console. Interestingly, The standard Jet Black PS4 500GB and PS4 Pro models are not included in the list, this suggests that Sony might still manufacture and sell the consoles at a much lower retail price.

The 2020 Holiday season revealed that Sony managed to sell around 165,670 worldwide, Xbox Series X|S sold around 192,413, this indicates that Sony’s last-gen console is still an excellent piece of hardware for most players and, similar to the PS1 and PS2, is very capable of competing with its successor, something that might not be in the plans of Sony, as the PS5 is designed to be backward compatible.

Xbox has already announced that they are discontinuing the manufacture of new Xbox One X and Xbox One S All-Digital Edition. PlayStation is also moving forwards with the new PlayStation Store removing PS3 and PSP games, however, there is a bit of confusion in Sony’s marketing team, as the company is selling both the PS4 Pro and the PS5 Digital Version for 399 USD, something that does not make any sense.

PlayStation may be in the need to continue selling the base PS4 console to compete with much cheaper Nintendo Switch Lite and the Xbox Series S.
