According to a Bloomberg report, Sony is increasing the production of PS5 amid worries of a second wave of COVID-19. Insiders told the financial news outlet that Sony is interested in the boost of the video games industry caused by the pandemic disease, for that reason, they want to make sure that over 10 million units can be shipped this year.
Sony Corp has reportedly asked their manufacturing plants and associates to “radically” increase the orders for the next-gen console. Sony initially planned to produce 5-6 million units by the end of March 2021. However, Sony is facing another obstacle, the main problem now is that a large number of PS5 are manufactured in China. Insiders anticipate shipping constraints to affect the units being actually available by the holiday season.
Insiders told Bloomberg that Sony expects 5 million units being manufactured by the end of September, other 5 million between October and December.
A large portion of the latter tranche would turn into stock for 2021 due to the logistical delay. Sony could try to use air cargo for faster delivery, as it did in 2013 around the launch of the PlayStation 4, though airlines are running vastly reduced schedules due to Covid-19 and Sony’s ability to reserve flights would be limited.
