Following the announcement today that Sony is set to purchase the studio behind the original Halo and Destiny, Bungie, It looks like Sony has not finished their planned acquisitions. Today’s deal is set to cost $3.6 Billion dollars, according to new reports this is only the first of large acquisitions that Sony plans to carry out.
Gameindustry.Biz writer Christopher Dring spoke with Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO and President Jim Ryan, who made a statement about the Bungie purchase earlier today. It was stated by Dring that Ryan had told him “We should expect more” when it comes to the future of Sony acquiring companies.
He also outlined in a series of tweets that the Sony purchase was in the works for several months and not a reactionary maneuver to the recent $12 billion acquisition of Zynga by Take-Two or the $68 billion Activision Blizzard acquisition by Microsoft, both just recently closed. In actuality, he states that this purchase was made by Sony “is to help boost their own abilities to make live-service, multiplatform games. equally, Sony unlocks the potential to Bungie to strengthen its technical capabilities and the prospect of taking its games to movies/TV.”
Where their deal bears some similarities to the Activision Blizzard deal is that it has been stated that Bungie will act independently and continue to develop multiplatform games, something that the soon-to-be Microsoft-owned Call of Duty is expected to do, at least for their next few titles. Both companies enjoyed a large multiplatform audience before being acquired, which makes the move beneficial.
Sony, throughout 2021, had made several acquisitions of studios such as Firesprite, Bluepoint, and Housemarque, as well as support studios like Nixxes and Valkyrie. It looks like, based on both this acquisition and statement, the company has similar plans for 2022. Bungie had previously denied rumors that they were in talks with Microsoft to be acquired in 2021 and now we finally know why.
