According to recent rumors, Sony is actively working on a new, more powerful version, of the PlayStation 4. While Sony refuses to “comment on rumors or speculation.”
The rumor suggesting that the PS4.5 is in development, it detailed the console to feature an upgraded GPU to support both 4K resolution and add more processing power for games that utilize the PlayStation VR headset.
This isn’t the first time that we have heard of a new iteration for the next-gen consoles. A new Xbox One has been in talks since last year and the supposed ‘Xbox One Mini’ was rumored to be a third of the size of the current Xbox One and much quieter.
The PS4 cannot currently output 4K content, and it’s optical drive cannot read 4K Blu-ray discs. Masayasu Ito, executive vice president at Sony Computer Entertainment, said in an interview with 4Gamer in October that Sony was considering an enhanced PS4 that could support 4K Blu-ray discs.
“Currently, PlayStation 4 can output games at a max resolution of 1920×1080 pixels when playing games, whereas 4K outputs at 4096×2160 pixels. PlayStation 4 does, however, support 4K resolution for photos and videos.”
