creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone have signed a massive new deal for their series that includes the continuation of the series through to 2027, 14 original South Park movies to premiere on Paramount+, and a new video game to be developed at some point in the future. This deal was struck with ViacomCBS’ MTV Entertainment Studios, with 2 of the 14 movies set to premiere this year.
Chris McCarthy, President/CEO of MTV Entertainment and CCO of Adult Animation at Paramount+ stated:
“Franchising marquee content like South Park and developing new IP with tremendous talent like Matt and Trey, is at the heart of our strategy to continue growing Paramount+.”
This implies that they will be also working on new content outside of simply South Park. Speak about the deal, tray Parker and Matt Stone Stated:
Comedy Central has been our home for 25 years and we’re really happy that they’ve made a commitment to us for the next 75 years. When we came to ViacomCBS with a different way to produce the show during the pandemic, [they] were immediately supportive and enabled us to try something new. We can’t wait to get back to doing traditional South Park episodes but now we can also try out new formats.
As for the newest video game in the franchise, nothing has been announced yet as to what we can expect. Based on the success of the previous two games, which used an RPG and open-world approach to bring the south park universe to life, being well received it is unlikely they will change the approach now.
The first game in the series South Park: Stick of Truth was developed by Obsidian Software, who are well known for their work on RPG franchises such as Fallout: New Vegas. Development of the second game in the series, South Park: The Fractured But Whole was done by Ubisoft San Francisco. Both games were produced by Ubisoft which means that most likely we can expect them to do so again. Obsidian was also purchased by Microsoft a year after the release of the second game, most likely making the unviable to return to the series.
In other news Trey Park and Matt Stone are looking to buy Casa Bonita, a restaurant featured both on an episode of their show and as DLC for the second game. The restaurant’s owners recently filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy during the Covid-19 Pandemic.
