Spencer: Amazon and Google are the Main Competitors

According to reports, Microsoft’s Head of Gaming Phil Spencer revealed that Microsoft is preparing to compete beyond consoles, he says that, Sony and Nintendo don’t represent a bigger threat than Amazon and Google in the future.

Protocol reports a brief statement made by Phil Spencer, according to it Microsoft have been heavily investing in the cloud, and only Amazon and Google might cause them troubles.

When you talk about Nintendo and Sony, we have a ton of respect for them, but we see Amazon and Google as the main competitors going forward. That’s not to disrespect Nintendo and Sony, but the traditional gaming companies are somewhat out of position. I guess they could try to re-create Azure, but we’ve invested tens of billions of dollars in the cloud over the years.

I don’t want to be in a fight over format wars with those guys while Amazon and Google are focusing on how to get gaming to 7 billion people around the world. Ultimately, that’s the goal.

Spencer mentions Azure’s head start over competing services, this has forced Sony to partner with Microsoft to use their Azure cloud computing service. Cloud gaming services might reach to a different kind of player, the casual-occasional one, Amazon, Google, Microsoft, NVIDIA and Apple are targeting the kind of player who is not interested in the latest console or rather will invest in a high-end PC.

The setback of gaming over cloud service is the latency, is that input lag that could be enough to some players to prefer playing with a dedicated hardware, the further away the server is located the more latency will be experienced. But gaming over the is something that is still being tested, Microsoft’s xCloud, Google Stadia are slowly introducing themselves to gamers in areas of the world in which network capabilities can meet the requirements. Amazon has not announced their cloud gaming service, according to rumors and insiders opinions, the service will be announced soon.
