Xbox Boss, Phil Spencer, has responded a tweet from an Xbox fan, the user asked if the Xbox Series X would represent a significant improvement from the recent generation of consoles. Spencer, claims that the powerful hardware inside the small box, along with the latest technology, will have an impact like the Nintendo 64 or the Sony PlayStation had at launch.
In my view the feel of games this upcoming generation will change as dramatically as any since 2D to 3D given CPU upgrade, DLI, memory bandwidth and SSD.’ RT on console will be great. I’m very focused on the work we are doing around Dynamic Latency Input (DLI). In my view the feel of games this upcoming generation will change as dramatically as any since 2D to 3D given CPU upgrade, DLI, memory bandwidth and SSD.
Certainly, no one can deny the generational leap between a PS1 and a PS2, or from a Xbox 360 to an Xbox One. But is true that the launch of the sixth, seventh and eighth generation of consoles, saw an impressive improvement from previous gen, but the change wasn’t as “dramatic”. Fans always want more.
Xbox made it clear that they want Xbox Series X to be a real, next gen device, the console is not an update from the Xbox Series X, or a PC as many feared. Back in January 2020, Xbox revealed the chip of the Series X, revealing that the console is built to handle 8K.
But as Spencer explained via Twitter, Xbox doesn’t not relies on the raw power to do the job, the system is designed and optimized to take full advantage of new technologies.
“While the Xbox Series X will deliver a massive increase in GPU performance and continue to redefine and advance the state of art in graphics with new capabilities such as hardware accelerated raytracing,” said Jason Ronald, Director of Product Management on Xbox Series X, “we don’t believe this generation will be defined by graphics or resolution alone.”
“The Xbox Series X is going to be a beacon of technical innovation leadership for this console generation and will propagate the innovation throughout the DirectX ecosystem this year and into next year.” Said Sebastien Nussbaum, Corporate Vice President & Senior Fellow, Semi-Custom Products and Technologies at AMD.
Game design will likely to change as developer counts with a NVMe SSD built in every machine to handle the large textures that demands 4K gaming. As if NVMe was good enough, Xbox Velocity Architecture will make loading and streaming even faster, Xbox will count with a dedicated hardware decompression block, allowing developers to radically improve asset streaming and effectively multiplying memory.
